- Crowning Moment of Awesome - James Caan, convincing an army surgeon to examine his commanding officer (whom the surgeon dismisses as dead). "Would you look at him please, sir? [draws pistol] Right now. Or I'll blow your fuckin' head off."
- In case any bets need to be settled, this actually happened.
- "I'm sorry, we'd like to accept your surrender, but we haven't the proper facilities to take you all prisoner."
- Crowning Music of Awesome - John Addison's soundtrack is quiet memorable, especially its overture/main theme. Addison actually fought in Operation Market Garden as a tank commander.
- Crowning Moment of Funny - When, during a truce, the Germans ask Colonel Frost if he'd be willing to discuss terms for surrender. (The Germans have them completely surrounded at this point.) Frost's adjutant refuses by telling them that he doesn't have any facilities to accept their surrender. (This particular scene is fiction, it didn't happen in Real Life.)
- Also the scene in Field Marshal Model's HQ. In real life, Model did confuse the landing forces for commandos out to capture him.
Adjutant: "British paratroopers have landed three kilometers from here!" |
- Love It or Hate It - Is liked by many, but has also showed up in some "Worst war films ever made" lists.
- Padding - Has been criticized for being too long and too repetitive.
- Special Effect Failure - Several instances:
- The first mocked-up Panther tank that attacked Frost and his men in Arnhem is clearly lacking its muzzle breaker. Odd, since the other tanks are clearly firing with their muzzle breakers attached during Bittrich's counterattack.
- In some scenes, you can clearly spot painfully fake-looking Sherman tanks whose treads don't move (or at least look like they're floating in the air) because they're actually VW Beetles and Land Rovers with fiberglass chassis on them.
- During the scene where the XXX Corps get ambushed by German AT guns, some of the destroyed Sherman tanks turn into Chaffees, Wolverines, and anachronistic Patton tanks, for some reason.
- Tear Jerker - Plenty, particularly the scene at the end where the injured soldiers sing "Abide With Me" as they wait for the Germans to take them prisoner.
- Vindicated by History: Mostly ignored in the U.S. at the time of its release (unsurprisingly), though its reputation has improved over time.
